TaxAct Helps Promote Financial Literacy in Dallas Community
As a tax prep service, we know financial literacy is an invaluable skill to have, no matter your goals or occupation.
But finances tend to be a touchy subject for many Americans. A Global Financial Literacy survey back in 2018 found that 60 percent of U.S. adults classified themselves as financially anxious. This was even before the coronavirus pandemic and the record inflation rate we’ve had to adjust to over the past year.
TaxAct® wants to help change this statistic. This year, we partnered with the Dallas Stars Foundation to support an excellent community program centered around building financial literacy.
The program is run by the Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity nonprofit organization. They offer a digital financial education program for children called Pocketwise Prep. TaxAct and the Dallas Stars are sponsoring three schools in the Dallas Community, giving students access to the Pocketwise Prep program.
This education program aims to educate students about various financial topics. It teaches kids the importance of financial literacy early on, giving them a strong foundation of knowledge to build upon to be better equipped to achieve their financial goals later in life.
“We are very excited to partner with the Stars Foundation in this effort and can’t thank the Dallas area Habitat for Humanity enough for making it possible,” said Curtis Campbell, TaxAct President. “Establishing a strong financial foundation early in life is an incredibly important step for reaching financial goals as an adult. That’s why we’re passionate about getting this interactive learning platform into the hands of these students so they can begin building the skillsets needed to master their financial future.”
Sponsoring basketball camp with the Dallas Mavs
While spreading knowledge about financial literacy is an admirable goal, let’s not underestimate the joy fun and games can bring, too.
On March 8, TaxAct also had the opportunity to sponsor a girls’ basketball camp called “Her Time to Play.” The Dallas Mavericks and the Jr. NBA coordinated the team-building event, designed for deserving girls ages 8-18 from underprivileged areas of the Dallas community.
Each year, Dallas Mavs experts coach the basketball camp free of charge. The expert coaches this year were Mavs players Dorian Finney-Smith and Davis Bertans.
By sponsoring the event, TaxAct made camp attendance accessible for the girls, who get to learn about basketball and fundamental values such as respect, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
